Design Build

Government/Industrial

Renovation

Elmendorf AFB Fitness Center

UNIT COMPANY was the Prime Contractor for the renewal of the Air Force’s 1950’s era fitness center.   This design build project included a 48,743 square foot of addition and 57,080 square foot renovation of existing spaces.

The addition included weight and resistance training areas, 2 group exercise areas, 6 racquetball courts, a 1/10th mile banked running track, administrative office areas and a dynamic lobby-reception area that is the entrance and the hub of the facility.

The renovation included significant seismic upgrades and improvements to the locker rooms, pool area, mechanical and electrical systems and support areas.

The original facility was unsprinklered so UNIT’s scope included installing a new sprinkler system for the entire facility including the existing gymnasium attic and underfloor areas as well as the pool area. This fire protection system was designed to today’s modern codes and required significant coordination with the existing structure and electrical/mechanical systems.

UNIT self-performed concrete seismic retrofit work, new concrete installation, structural and miscellaneous steel, exterior windows, all general condition/carpentry/laborer work for entire project including significant temporary weather protection during the winter construction season.

This design build project received a regional award for design excellence from the military PACAF in 2007.
