Renovation

Radiation Therapy Center - Alaska Regional Hospital

UNIT was selected to renovate the 6,000 SF Radiation Therapy Clinic at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska including the Linear Accelator facility.

This project is a good example of our ability to maximize value on one of our projects.  Standard construction of the shielding for the radioactive processes required in the linear accelaerator medical procedure include a roof of structural concrete  that is 6 ½ foot thick and includes a 5 ½ in thick steel plate located in the center of the concrete.  The construction methods needed to construct this detail were not possible on the interior of an existing occupied hospital.  Our construction team investigated alternate shielding technology that has been developed for just this application and made these processes available to the design team.  Instead of the massive steel plates that were required in the original design masonry blocks filled with lead bb’s were used to cover the revised thinner concrete roof and provide the level of shielding that was necessary. Despite the added design costs as a result of this change the project was constructed with a overall savings of over $65,000 to the original project budget.
