New Construction

Ed's Place Addition to Providence Horizon House

In May of 2001 UNIT was selected as the Construction Manager as Constructor (CMC) for the Ed’s Place Addition to Horizon House.  Providence’s Horizon House is a senior assisted living community, which promotes continued participation in the responsibilities and freedoms of life.  Ed’s Place Addition is a 14,000 SF Dementia wing specifically designed to accommodate and care for the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Soon after our selection, UNIT began work with the design team to format a budget based upon the programming needs and conceptual design that had already been prepared.  Our initial budget confirmed that the conceptual design was in concert with the funding that was available for this project.  Upon Providence’s staff approval, we coordinated with the design team and focused efforts on site, civil and structural items that would allow fast track and phased construction activity to begin.

The project broke ground in July 2001 and began work with only civil and foundation design and permits in place.  UNIT continued to work with the design team to provide the data needed to obtain phased permits from the Municipality of Anchorage that allowed construction to continue on the aggressive schedule.

“The cottages are attached by a walkway to the Horizon House apartments, and the goal in its design was that a resident never feels lost.  Everything about the cottages, from bathroom design to staffing has been determined by best-practice research on Alzheimer’s building design and care planning.”
